Man Injured in Oldsmar Rollover Crash

Posted: June 22, 2016

A 77 year-old man was injured in a rollover crash this afternoon on Forest Lake Blvd in Oldsmar.

The crash occurred shortly after 4 PM on Wednesday, June 22, 2016.
According to investigators from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.), 48-year-old Joel Vergara-Rodriguez and his passenger 77-year-old J. Cleofas Vergara-Jaimes, were traveling southbound on Forest Lakes Boulevard just south of Tampa Road in a 2002 Dodge Dakota.

As the two Oldsmar residents approached the exit to the Walgreens parking lot on Forest
Lake Boulevard, it was struck by a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, being driven by
18-year-old Chelsea Caldwell of Tarpon Springs.

Investigators say that Caldwell was making a left northbound turn onto Forest
Lakes Boulevard from the Walgreens exit and did not see the Durango approaching.
Caldwell’s Hyundai struck the rear passenger side of the Durango pushing it sideways causing it to rollover. It did come to rest upright on all four tires.

Caldwell and Joel Vergara-Rodriguez were not injured. J. Cleofas
Vergara-Jaimes received what was originally believed to be life-threatening
injuries and was flown via Bayflite to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for medical treatment.

No update was provided by the Sheriff’s Office regarding his current condition or if the occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Investigators say that speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in this crash.

The investigation continues.
