Firefighters free a man after his vehicle strikes a pole in Clearwater.  The crash occurred shortly before 6:30 PM on Saturday, March 12, 2016.

Multiple rescue personnel responded to the crash which occurred in the northbound lanes of Frontage Road just to the north of Belleair Road.

According to Lieutenant Paul Amodeo of Largo Police Department, an officer performed a traffic stop on the Ford Mustang south of Belleair Road.  The Largo Police Officer walked up to the vehicle when the driver then fled the scene.  The male driver had three passengers in the vehicle including two children; a 3 month-old and a 4 year-old.

The officer radioed that the vehicle was not going to be pursued and observed an unrestrained child in the vehicle.  Shortly after the driver fled the traffic stop, the crash occurred as the driver was traveling a high rate of speed on Frontage Road.

An adult female along with an infant and young child were removed from the vehicle and transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg in stable condition.  The male driver was unable to be freed and required extensive extrication.  It took firefighters about 50 minutes to free the man.  He was conscious at the scene but the extent of his injuries are not known at this time.  He was transported to Bayfront Health by Bayflite.

Largo Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Lt.  Amodeo states that charges and toxicology test results are pending.
